Flaming Burger Challenge – the 1kg Burger 7

The flaming burger challenge is a national challenge which you can get in any Flaming Grill Pub. There are two in Sheffield. The Ridgeway Arms and the Belfry. I did the one at the Ridgeway Arms.

The Flaming Challenge Burger contains:

  • Two flame-grilled 12oz beef burgers
  • Two breaded chicken fillets
  • Spicy chilli beef
  • Melted Cheddar cheese
  • Onions
  • Crispy bacon
  • Onion rings
  • And served with a giant helping of chips!

The whole burger weighs 1kg which is about 36 ounces which is like eating a burger with 9 quarter pounders on it. Plus there was a side order of fries. At only £8.99 it was good value compared to everything else on the menu. If you complete it, you get a certificate and your picture on the wall of fame.

I went with a few friends for this one. There were 5 of us that took on the challenge.

From left to right, Ryan, Greg, Matt, Shaun, Ben. It was pretty much as I expected it. Shaun, pretty much gave up once he saw the burger, didn’t even get half way before he threw in the towel. Matt made a decent effort and finished it. Ryan and Greg tried so hard, and got so far, but in the end, it doesn’t even matter… they failed. As for me, I demolished it.

Its not surprising though as I properly prepared for this challenge. The toughness of the burrito challenge made me realise the importance of training. The night before, I had, a chicken stir fry, a rack of ribs, 2 litres of water and 2 cucumbers. Why 2 cucumbers? Because they expand your stomach without putting too many calories on. I started the challenge at about 6pm. I didn’t have anything to eat all day and ran 10 miles to build up an appetite. I didn’t time the challenge but I did it all in around 15 minutes.

I didn’t actually feel that bad after and just to showboat, I had a dessert too. Not just any dessert, a massive sharer, called the chocolate mega mountain. I demolished that. It was really nice after all that savoury food.

In terms of eating challenges, its not that tough. If you don’t prepare properly then you’ll struggle like, Shaun, Greg and Ryan did but if you do, its quite straightforward as there is no time limit. A really good effort from Matt though, whose training was just a heavy night’s drinking.

Its worth a try though and the pub is really nice.

How you managed to complete that in 15 mins is beyond me (amazing stuff though). I ate non stop and completed in just under 40 mins – and I thought that was tough going!

Hi my name is Chris Powell some people may remember me as a player who used to play for Watford Football Club and managed Charlton Athletic. Basically let me get straight to the point me and my lovely wife went to the Flaming Grill in Woolwich and a nice young lady came to me and she said “I recommend the flaming burger challenge. So I got that and finished it in 7 minutes and 40 seconds. That was best burger I’ve ever had. This is Chris Powell and I will thank you for your time.
