Devastator Burger Challenge – Hoxton London 1

This is the food challenge that actually sparked the idea of taking up competitive eating. I’d read about the challenge online and seen a few people attempt it on Youtube. I was down in London for a conference and figured I could do it one lunch time.

Daily Mail article on the Devastator Challenge.

The restaurant is the Red Dog Saloon, 37 Hoxton Square, London N1 6NN. Its a 5-10 minute walk from Old Street Tube station.

The Devastator burger consists of

  • six bacon rashers,
  • three 6oz beef burger patties,
  • six slices of cheese
  • 200g of pulled pork

You have to eat this with a side of coleslaw, fries and a milkshake. The tough thing about this challenge is the time limit. You have to do it in 10 minutes.

This is the burger. Its not as big looking from my camera phone. There are much better pictures on Google images.

Compared to other burgers, the Devastator isn’t that big. I think that’s why the time limit is on there. I started off tackling the burger, then fries and coleslaw together. I was very clean and ate it all with a knife and fork. By the end, the milkshake had melted enough for me do drink that in a few seconds.

I managed to complete the challenge in 9 minutes 38 seconds. I could have done it a bit quicker but as I wasn’t racing against anyone there was no point in going any faster.

For completing the challenge I got a t-shirt. It probably would have been better if it was something that said, “I demolished the Devastator” rather than a “Red Dog Saloon” t-shirt. The meal itself came to about £25 including service charge. Not bad I suppose and I didn’t have to eat for the rest of the day.

As I said, the burger isn’t that big and I walked out of the place full but not in pain. I have walked out of Chinese buffets hurting more! If there was no time limit, I am sure the pass rate would be well over 50% and wouldn’t be a challenge.
