Harley Burger Eating Contest May 2013

The Harley is a pub on the edge of Sheffield City Centre. They are holding a burger eating contest in May. It’s a “Nathan’s style” contest where you aren’t competing against the food but against other eaters.

The challenge from their facebook page.

Yep, it’s back. Man vs Burger is back at The Harley.

Everyone’s favourite spectator sport; competitive eating, returns for one glorious week in May.
Have a well earned half hour break from revision and take on the We Be Burnin’ burger for the chance to win one of two amazing prizes.

How it works:
There are a series of heats during the week Mon 6th- Fri 10th May.
In these heats participants race one another to finish their We Be Burnin’ burger.
The first to clear their plate wins a place in Saturday 11th Grand Finale.
For the Grand Finale it’s the ultimate battle as the weeks victors wolf down their burgers once more to win the grand prize.

The prize:
The ultimate winner can choose EITHER
A burger and booze party with a keg of ale and one of everything on the burger menu OR
A years worth of burgers

The burger:
We Be Burnin’ – a burger featuring four beef patties, Harley Hot Hot Hot Sauce, ghost chilli spice, extra spicy beef chilli, wasabi paste, chipotle paste. Served with Hellfire fries.

Not for the faint hearted!

How you enter:
Sign up to a heat at The Harley’s bar. Sign-up sheets will be behind the bar from midday Thursday 25th April.
It costs £4 to enter and this covers the cost of the burger.
Heats: 3pm and 6pm Monday 6th – Friday 10th May
Grand finale: 3pm Saturday 11th May

Not up for taking part? Man vs. Burger makes for a great spectator sport. With drinks from £2.25 until 9pm, you can’t go wrong!

I tried to scope out the challenge in advance. I ordered a Ghostspiced Killah from the menu.

This spicy burger ain’t nuthing ta f’wit. Tripple beef patty – Harley hot hot hot sauce – monterey jack – jalepeno salsa – ghost chilli spice – lettuce – brochie bun.

It was hot but nothing too hot. The barman said the challenge would be a lot hotter though as the chef was in a particular cruel mood. Those hellfire fries aren’t too bad either. They are hot but if you ram them down, its not too much hassle.

I have signed up to the heat on Wednesday 8th May at 3pm and hopefully be in the final. I am not too concerned about the heat. Everyone is going to suffer as much as me. My main concern is if some big rugby type player enters. The trouble with these contests is that success depends on who you are up against rather than anything you can control. The other thing is that the Sheffield Half Marathon is happening the day after the final. If it is too hot then I’ll not bother. I don’t want to be running 13 miles the day after a spicy meal.

Here’s a video I found of a previous contest at the Harley. Looks fun.

If you follow the Twisted Burger Company on twitter or like their facebook page, you get special discounts (currently 25% off) so its worth doing so if you haven’t already.
