Ultimate Burger Challenge at Relish in Sheffield

This is a burger challenge from Relish on Ecclesall road. Its fairly new so not much information the internet about it. On their website there is a drawing of the burger but no pictures of it.

The challenge is a giant burger, a pile of onions rings, pound of fries, coleslaw, hot wings and a coke float in 45 minutes.

The winners will get a T-Shirt as well a picture on the wall of fame.

At £30 and free to winners this was going to be a tough one. I was 50/50 whether I could do this one after my hubcap challenge victory. That was a 32oz burger with a lot of bread. This one was 4 * 6oz patties plus all the extras. I’d do the burger no problem but as with all these challenges, its the sides that do you.

They make you sign something to say you understand the rules.

The funny thing about that is there is no dunking food into water. I think they might have been expecting Takeru Kobayashi, to come, dunk the meal in a bucket of water and gulp it down in a few minutes!

So far there have been 5 contenders and only 1 winner. It’s nice to know that the challenge was beatable. I hate those where no one has completed them as you don’t know whether they are possible or not.

The manager was talking to me in advance of the meal saying that the challenge is nice because of the variety of food there. Lots of different tastes so you never get bored. I am not convinced. I prefer a mono-tasting challenge. No chance of any nasty surprises then.

The burger

I order this with my nephew and when it first came out, I thought it wasn’t too bad. Each burger looked big but doable. It was only when I looked closer, I’d realised it was just one challenge. They had to put the burger in 2 buns or it wouldn’t stand up.

So each burger was rammed with topping. The tex mex topping was beef chili, cheddar cheese, guacamole, sour cream and pickle. Say cheese was monterey jack cheese, fried onions and crispy potato chips. The full monty topping was fried egg, roast tomato relish, black pudding bits. There were 3 battered jalapenos and hot sauce too. I am not too keen on black pudding. The thought of eating dried blood is horrible plus battered jalapenos aren’t that nice either.

I was smiling at the start but this one was going to be brutal. I decided to tackle the chips first. Get as many of those down as possible using the burger toppings as dips. In between I tackled the wings, there were 5 fairly large ones, the onion rings and coleslaw. I left the coke float for later. I figured the liquid would go down easier once the ice cream had melted.

20 minutes in and I was well on course to finish the challenge. The problem is that I that I hit the wall about this time. My stomach was hurting.

10 minutes later and barely anything else eaten. Coke float done though. Then 3 minutes later I throw in the towel. Not feeling too good at this point.

I had 10 minutes left but I’d had enough. Not a bad effort at all. Much better than my nephew who came with me.

He had a full meal left.

So we ended up on the wall on shame. Guess there is really no shame in that really as the challenge is so hard.

Maybe one day I’ll go back after some proper training and end up on here.

Despite losing, it was a pleasant enough experience. The place was really nice, staff really friendly and looking at the menu, that was very reasonable too.
