The Hub Cap Burger Challenge at the Fairway Inn Sheffield 2

This was a challenge I was told about by a friend. There isn’t much information online about this one as the pub doesn’t seem to have a website. I called up and I was told it was a 32oz burger with a standard portion of fries.

So I get there and its on the menu.

A 32oz burger served on a bed of crisp lettuce with sliced tomatoes and mayonnaise in a massive burger bun loaded with bacon topped with melted cheese. Burger is served with a generous serving of french fries.

The fries were plentiful but not that much for a challenge. Usually they load up with fries to make these challenges extra tough. The difficult thing about this one was the amount of bread. Usually they stack the burgers high so a 32oz burger would be a stack of 8 quarter pounders with only 2 slices of bread. This was like eating 8 quarter pound cheese and bacon burgers.

My tactic was to cut the burger up in to 8 little burgers. Paul who did the challenge with me, decided to tackle the burger first and leave the bread.

This was a mistake as he’d have a load of bread at the end to eat. Best off mixing it up.

After 25 minutes Paul had given up, not even managing to eat the 32oz of burger and with about 6 breadcakes left.

I was powering through the challenge. It was actually quite enjoyable until 3 burgers left. Thats when I started getting full. I wasn’t going to fail this challenge though and with no time limit, I could take my time. At 30 minutes in I was on the final straight.

This was the hardest burger of the 8 though. I ended up having to eat the patty separately and then eat the bread. Eating it as a burger was too much at this late stage.

8 minutes later I had completed the challenge.

I could have probably done it all in less than 38 minutes but as there was no time limit I took my time. Maybe if I was going quicker it would have been less painful.

Overall, it was a nice challenge and quite reasonably priced. I reckon that burger could have fed 4 people easily so if you are ever up there you could order one to share.

In the New Year they are going to make it a proper challenge with a prize of some sort for finishing it. Until then though, its just for fun.

My friend and I are taking each other on in a hub cap 32oz burger challenge on march 24th at the Wirral one hundred pub nr backford cross A41 on the Wirral at about 6:30pm before our pub poker league with redtooth pub poker. Do you have any tips on preparing before this big feast?

I would eat a big meal the day before and then don’t eat for about 20 hours before. That stretches the stomach but leaves it empty for the challenge. http://www.randysantel.com/randys-challenge-advice is some good advice.

If you think you are going to get close then I’d suggest not doing it before a poker game. All I wanted to do after I finished was lie down. I definitely wouldn’t want to be playing poker after.
