The Double Knuckle Challenge – Octoberfest Pub 4

Ok, so I have known about this challenge for a while, but for one reason or another kept deciding to save it for another day. I first saw it on Randy Santell’s channel, so in the back of my mind, I wanted to beat that time. Since the challenge I had originally planned for the day messed up, and I was prepped for a big one, I thought now would be a great opportunity to have a go at beating that time.

The challenge consists of:

  • Two pork knuckles
  • A giant portion of chips
  • A side of sauerkraut
  • A side of potato salad
  • A full stein of beer

You have 45 minutes to complete. The meal costs £35, is not free if you win, but, you do go up on the wall of fame, that is rather empty at the moment, and you get a beer glass to take home as a trophy.

For my attempt, I stuck to the tried and tested protein first. The pork knuckles were hot, but delicious (think bacon joints from Delis, with a nice bit of crackling on the outside). To help with the heat, I tore them to pieces as I went along to let the heat escape. To be honest, they cooled to a reasonable temperature quite fast, so if you are a bit slower, you might not have to do that. At first I was using water to manage heat and speed, but realised I had a side of sauerkraut that did the job just as well, plus, it was actually part of the challenge. The pork knuckles and sauerkraut were gone quite quickly.

Next, were the chips. Now, if you have read my previous challenges, you know I’m not the biggest fan of these. It was a big serving too. Luckily, I had a big ol stein of beer to help me with these. It was just a matter of getting through it. The beer adds an interesting twist to this challenge since the bubbles fill up your stomach, so beware of that. You feel fuller than you actually are. I’m not a big beer drinker, but I really appreciated this one. It made dealing with the chips easy, if not time consuming. To help mix up the flavours, towards the end I started mixing in the potato salad with the chips.

It’s been a long time since I had potato salad. It had a somewhat gherkin touch to it I suppose. Hard to describe, but this was definitely more enjoyable than previous experiences with potato salads. It cut through the flavours of the meal and beer quite well to help mix up the palate. A reasonable portion, but I think the fact I was coming to an end of the challenge and the welcome respite from chips meant I breezed through this portion.

Overall, this is definitely a unique challenge. The food may not be for everyone. As someone open to trying different cuisines, I enjoyed it. It left me full, somewhat bloated from the beer, but overall, not a painful quantity of food. In fact, I’m quite surprised the win rate on this one is this low as the quantity of food for the given time limit is quite generous.

If you fancy a go, you can find it at:

678-680 Fulham Rd, Fulham, London SW6 5SA

The only word of caution, this place gets really full on match days as I learnt.

Good point, forgot to post the time.

Got 18.46; so beat his time on this one, sorry Randy.

Yeah, going into it I knew this wouldn’t be for everyone. A unique challenge for sure.

What was the original plan that fell through?

A really big burger (around 5kg big). I’ve had a crack at it now and it beat me, so not one to mess with, at least in the current state that challenge is set up in. I’ll post it later this year since I have some other content I want to get out before then.
