Go Hard or Go Home – Bourbon Smokehouse 2

I’m not going to deny, I’m pretty happy being the first one to complete this.

So, some time ago I heard Leamington Spa had another challenge. The other challenge was the first major challenge I ever did and it was a tough one. I could not leave a challenge unbeaten in the city where it all began.

Unfortunately, I have been pretty busy, so was unable to visit sooner. I’ll be honest, I grew nervous since there were quite a few attempts at this one by others, yet it remained unbeaten. Having done it, I can see why, the challenge consists of:

  • 72 Oz Rump Steam
  • 1 Pound of Chips
  • Coleslaw
  • Side Salad
  • Tomatoes

Oh man, that thing was intimidating. However, it tasted great. Cooked just like I asked, juicy, a touch of salt and spices on the coating for more flavour. As usual, I started with the meat since I always find it is easier to get down before it cools. It went down quite quickly. Saying that though, it’s a lot of meat. My jaw got tired towards the end and it got a bit tougher to chew once it started cooling. Luckily, I used the tomatoes that came with the challenge to my advantage during that point to help get it down. I didn’t want to drink water since I didn’t know how much space in my stomach I would need, so little tricks like using vegetables as a substitute for water helped here. Hey, they are part of the challenge, so might as well use them to your advantage.

Not going to lie, about 12 minutes in, as I finished the meat I had some doubts whether I could complete this one. It felt like I was full after the steak. There seemed to be a lot of chips to get through, however, for a change, the chips went down quite easily. By the time I got to them they had absorbed the flavours of the meat, which gave them a great flavour. Switching up the flavours from the meat seemed to refresh me and I felt like I could keep going again.

Bit by it, forkful, by forkful I chipped away at the mountain of chips. When I started to get a bit bored of the flavour I used to slaw to my advantage and mixed it with the left over chips. In the end, I got through the whole meal in 25.26. I felt surprisingly fine afterwards. Definitely full, but not uncomfortable. With that in mind I think it is a pretty doable challenge due to the hour time limit, for those that have done challenges before anyway. Even if you hit the wall at some point, you should have enough time to coast it to the end. An hour is a long time and if you stand and walk around it’s a good amount of time for the food to settle a bit.

Scored the win, first person to beat this one. I was chuffed, so some dessert to celebrate was in order. The brownie with peanut butter ice cream was a great end to the meal. After all the meat and chips I had enough savoury food. Always room for dessert, especially ice cream. Always.

If you are in the Midlands and fancy a go at a great challenge, or if you just want to try the selection of more manageable meals on offer, definitely check out The Bourbon Smokehouse. Plus, if you stay late enough the place returns to its former self by transforming in to Altoria.
